Plastic Surgery and the Pandemic

Home/Blog / Plastic Surgery and the Pandemic

Did you know that during the pandemic, the field of plastic surgery saw a drastic increase? This may seem ironic since we were all hidden away for so long! Yet, according to a survey conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 11% of women who have never received plastic surgery before are more interested in procedures and treatments now than before the pandemic. Additionally, 24% of women who have previously had a plastic surgery procedure or cosmetic treatment are now more likely to seek more procedures than before.

We love to see so many people investing in their confidence! So, what is responsible for this pandemic plastic surgery boom? There are many factors leading people to choose a little rejuvenation this season. Read on to find out.

Backed up procedures

At the outset of the pandemic, as stay-at-home orders took effect and fear of the virus took hold, the industry of plastic surgery first saw a drastic dip. In the midst of stay-at-home orders and unknown risks of the virus, many plastic surgeons stopped performing elective procedures altogether. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports that the society’s board-certified surgeons continued this halt on elective procedures for an average of a little over eight weeks. Two whole months of canceled and rescheduled appointments across the country caused a huge backup, which is still spilling over and causing a spike in demand for cosmetic treatment and plastic surgery procedures.

The Zoom effect

As lives began to move online during the pandemic, people were spending hours and hours every day staring back at their own faces. Whether on work Zoom meetings, school sessions, video chats with friends and family, or social media, more time than ever was spent reflecting on one’s appearance, even though everyone was quarantined. Many wanted to perfect their Zoom-ready look and noticed ways that they could boost their confidence. Today, people are eager to achieve the rejuvenation that plastic surgery procedures and cosmetic treatments bring.

The COVID “19”

During quarantine, an overall sense of stagnancy and the inability to go about one’s normal routine caused many people to gain weight. This effect was common and a perfectly normal reaction to circumstances. As a response to this impact, many are now investing in body plastic surgery procedures. The ASPS survey revealed that tummy tucks and liposuction are among the top procedures that women who are now very interested in plastic surgery are seeking.

Taking advantage of time

Quite uniquely to normal life, the pandemic offered months of uninterrupted downtime for many. Instead of taking time off work and having to turn down invitations, it was easier than ever to receive a surgery or treatment and go about quarantine life as normal by conducting life online. Many took advantage by booking their procedures and treatments. And Dr. Houser was happy to know that patients were taking time to rest up while recovering!
