Portrait Plasma™
Portrait Plasma™ skin regeneration is unlike any other treatment available today. It is not a laser, radio frequency, or light-based treatment. It is a completely new plasma energy technology that works both on and below the surface of the skin to modify the skin’s architecture so that new collagen is generated.
Portrait Plasma™ is effective in reducing the look of fine lines and deep wrinkles, treating sun-damaged skin, improving skin tone and texture, improving acne scars and tightening skin. It works on a variety of skin types.
During the short, in-office procedure, the unique scientific action of Portrait Plasma™ transfers plasma energy to the treated area without direct contact to the skin. This technique preserves the skin’s outer layers which act as a protective dressing until new skin regenerates. Downtime is minimal and clinical studies show that the improvements you see following your treatment will become even more dramatic over time.

How does Portrait Plasma™ work?
The medical community has been using plasmas – highly charged ionized gas – for many years. Rhytec, a world leader in energy-based technologies, has successfully translated this revolutionary technology to the specialties of dermatology and cosmetic surgery. Known as Portrait®, the Plasma Skin Regeneration procedure is unparalleled for wrinkle reduction, skin tightening, and improvement in skin tone and texture. No other procedure treats more conditions at the same time – all of which are achieved with a low risk profile in which your own skin acts as a natural biological dressing during the healing process.
Portrait Plasma™ works by delivering millisecond pulses of nitrogen-based plasma to the skin’s surface via the system’s novel handpiece. Nitrogen is a colorless, odorless gaseous element that is part of all living tissues and makes up 80% of the atmosphere. When introduced to ultra-high frequency energy, the nitrogen is converted into a highly energized state, or plasma. From the handpiece, the plasma transfers its energy onto the skin without any direct contact, causing a very controlled heating of tissue and a unique thermal profile with no charring. Unlike other skin-rejuvenation treatments, Portrait Plasma™ leaves the skin surface intact. It works via an entirely different mode of action that is effective both at and below the skin’s surface. It stimulates the body to regenerate the damaged structural elements of the skin in a way that other technologies and treatments cannot. The results seen following treatment get better over time, with clinical studies showing continuing improvement a year later – a unique and significant advantage that distinguishes Portrait® from all other skin treatments.
What kind of results can I expect from Portrait Plasma™ skin regeneration?
The results are comparable to aggressive laser resurfacing but the downtime is dramatically reduced. It keeps working, stimulating collagen production and increasing elastin for up to one year with continued improvement to the skin. And, Portrait Plasma™ is safe and effective. It gives you the results you want without the lengthy downtime or the risks associated with other treatments.
Can this procedure be used on my entire face or is it just for small areas?
Portrait Plasma™ skin regeneration can be used to treat an entire face, chest, neck, hands or a smaller specific area. Treatment for an entire face can take as little as 20 minutes; a regional treatment can be as short as 10 – 15 minutes. Shortly after, you will see improvements in your skin texture and tone and diminished wrinkles giving you a new, more vibrant and youthful appearance. Over time you will see continuing improvement that is truly unique.

I have noticed that not all surgeons performing portrait plasma in Ohio are board certified. Why should I choose a plastic surgeon who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS)? Is this important?
An ASPS member surgeon has fulfilled the following requirements:
- Has at least five years of surgical training and a minimum of two years of plastic surgery training.
- Is board-certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
- Is trained and experienced in all plastic surgery procedures, including breast, body, face and reconstruction.
- Is peer-reviewed for safety and ethical standards prior to attaining the honor of active membership.
- Only operates in accredited facilities.
Why is it important to choose a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
Many physicians who perform cosmetic procedures will claim board certification, but it is important to clarify which board. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is a part of the American Board of Medical Specialties and has been in existence since 1937. Certification by this board signifies that the surgeon has completed an approved plastic surgery residency, has passed a comprehensive written examination, and has passed an oral examination. Following this, he or she is then required to maintain certification through case submissions, continuing medical education and written examinations. This rigorous process ensures that those who identify themselves as a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery are held to the highest standards of patient safety, patient satisfaction and ethical behavior.
