Gynecomastia Excision

Male breast development can occur in many different degrees, anything from a fully developed breast to enlargement beneath the nipple. Treatment is considered after all medical conditions that may be responsible are ruled out. Surgery consists of either liposuction, excision of breast tissue, or a combination of the two. Recovery is about 2 weeks.

Faqs on Gynecomastia Excision

How do I know if I am a good candidate for gynecomastia excision / male breast reduction surgery?

If you are considering gynecomastia excision / male breast reduction you should be in good overall health, a non-smoker and be close to your ideal weight. Individuals who drink alcohol in excess and who use certain illicit drugs are usually not good candidates for this surgery as these substances can sometimes cause gynecomastia / enlarged breasts in men. A private consultation with Columbus, Ohio board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Houser is the best way to determine if you are a good candidate for gynecomastia excision.

What causes gynecomastia / male breast enlargement?

Gynecomastia / male breast enlargement can be caused by hormonal changes, heredity, some diseases, and the use of certain drugs.

Does Dr. Houser perform many gynecomastia excision / male breast reduction surgeries?

Yes. Although this condition is bothersome and difficult for many men to discuss, it is actually a fairly common condition affecting an estimated 40%-60% of men. In some cases only one breast may be affected, in other cases, both breasts are affected.

Gynecomastia excision surgeries are a common procedure for Dr. Houser. He is experienced and skilled in the latest male breast reduction techniques. Dr. Houser is also active in resident education in Columbus, both at Ohio State University in the plastic surgery program, as well as in the general surgery program at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.

What kind of scars will I have from gynecomastia excision?

This depends largely on the surgical method and amount of tissue being removed. In some cases, the desired results can be achieved through liposuction alone which leaves a smaller scar. In other patients, breast tissue must be surgically removed often through an incision on the edge of the areola and from the sides and bottom of the breast. Dr. Houser will discuss this with you in depth at your private consultation. You will also be able to view before and after photos at your consultation with Dr. Houser.

My teenage son has enlarged breasts. Does he need to be a certain age to have gynecomastia excision?

Once it has been determined by a Pediatrician that there is no underlying medical cause for the condition, then a young man and his family may consider surgery. There is not necessarily a certain age, more a maturity level before undergoing surgery. Parents need to be sure that the child wants to have the surgery and not pushing surgery because of a perceived imperfection. Many young boys that are bothered by their appearance may refrain from taking their shirts off in public, avoid certain sports, or wear baggy clothes to hide their chest. Subtle signs like this may allow parents to begin a conversation about the condition and gauge his interest in seeing a doctor about correction.

Are the results of gynecomastia excision (male breast reduction) permanent?

In most patients the results of gynecomastia excision (male breast reduction) are permanent. However, significant weight gain and certain medical conditions can cause gynecomastia to return.

I have noticed that not all surgeons performing gynecomastia excision in Ohio are board certified. Why should I choose a plastic surgeon who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS)? Is this important?

An ASPS member surgeon has fulfilled the following requirements:

  • Has at least five years of surgical training and a minimum of two years of plastic surgery training.
  • Is board-certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
  • Is trained and experienced in all plastic surgery procedures, including breast, body, face and reconstruction.
  • Is peer-reviewed for safety and ethical standards prior to attaining the honor of active membership.
  • Only operates in accredited facilities.

Why is it important to choose a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

Many physicians who perform cosmetic procedures will claim board certification, but it is important to clarify which board. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is a part of the American Board of Medical Specialties and has been in existence since 1937. Certification by this board signifies that the surgeon has completed an approved plastic surgery residency, has passed a comprehensive written examination, and has passed an oral examination. Following this, he or she is then required to maintain certification through case submissions, continuing medical education and written examinations. This rigorous process ensures that those who identify themselves as a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery are held to the highest standards of patient safety, patient satisfaction and ethical behavior.
