Breast Reduction Information and FAQs)
Dr. Robert Houser. Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. Columbus, Ohio. Breast Reduction information.
Reduction Mammoplasty information. Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery of Columbus, Ohio. 614.890.5565.
For most, breast reduction surgery is aimed at reducing the volume of the breast to alleviate such ailments as neck and back pain, shoulder pain and rashes beneath the breasts. For others, it is
a way to better fit into their clothes and improve self confidence. Either way, reduction patients are
some of the most satisfied patients in plastic surgery.

As with the breast lift, a breast reduction may use either a lolly-pop incision or, more commonly, an anchor incision. Occasionally, breast reduction may be performed with liposuction alone. Recovery is about 2 weeks.
Breast Reduction FAQs
I have very large breasts and I suffer from back and shoulder pain. How do I know if I am a good candidate for breast reduction surgery?
The best candidates for breast reduction are women who are in good overall health, are at a normal, stable weight and whose breast development is complete. If you are a smoker, it is important to quit smoking completely for several weeks before and after your surgery. Smoking after your surgery can interfere with healing and compromise your results and your health.
I am considering breast reduction surgery but I am not sure that I am finished having children, should I wait?
Because there are many changes that come with pregnancy, some women prefer to postpone breast reduction surgery until they have finished having children. As the breasts enlarge during pregnancy and breastfeeding and then reduce in size, some of the results of breast reduction surgery may be compromised. However, many women do have breast reductions before having children and are happy with their decision.
Will I be able to breastfeed after having a breast reduction?
Reduction mammoplasty, also called breast reduction, may sometimes interfere with a womans ability to breastfeed. This is because significant amounts of breast tissue are removed which may interfere with the nerves that stimulate hormones and the release of milk during breastfeeding. This often depends on how extensive the surgery is. Dr. Houser would be happy to discuss any concerns you may have during your private consultation.
Does Dr. Houser perform many breast reduction surgeries?
Breast reduction surgery is a common procedure for Dr. Houser. He is experienced and skilled in the latest breast reduction techniques. Dr. Houser is also active in resident education in Columbus, both at Ohio State in the plastic surgery program as well as in the general surgery program at Mount Carmel Medical Center in Columbus.
Will my health insurance pay for my breast reduction?
Sometimes health insurance providers do cover breast reduction surgery, but not always. It often depends on the amount of breast tissue being removed and the symptoms that the patient is experiencing.
Will my breast reduction be performed at Dr. Houser's office or at a hospital?
Most breast reductions can be performed in our Westerville / Columbus, Ohio office which is located next to Mount Carmel St. Ann's Hospital. Our office has a fully equipped operating room that is certified by the American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilitates (AAAASF) and is fully compliant. Procedures in the office are performed with twilight sedation and local anesthesia. Regional anesthesia (epidural catheters or spinal anesthesia) is performed as needed by a qualified nurse anesthetist or an anesthesiologist. Most of our cosmetic procedures are performed in our facility which keeps your experience private and in the company of our staff with whom you will have already become accustomed.
Why are there no before and after pictures of breast reductions on this website?
Out of concern for patient privacy, Dr. Houser does not publish patient photos on the internet. In addition, because patients come in all shapes and sizes, posting photographs may lead to unrealistic expectations. During your breast reduction consultation at our Columbus, Ohio office, Dr. Houser can show you photos of patients with your physical characteristics, so that similarities and differences may be addressed.
It is important to consider factors other than cost when searching for a doctor to perform your breast lift. Surgical techniques and experience vary greatly from doctor to doctor. When searching for a doctor to perform your breast lift, you should look for a plastic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery (not all surgeons performing breast lifts are) and to find a surgeon who will spend time with you to find out your goals for your surgery. It is important to find a surgeon that you feel comfortable with and with whom you able to communicate well. Dr. Houser spends a great amount of time consulting with each patient. He understands that plastic surgery is a big decision, not to be entered into lightly, and he works hard to ensure that you will be happy with your results.
I have noticed that not all surgeons performing breast lifts are board certified. Why choose a plastic surgeon who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS)? Is this important?
An ASPS member surgeon has fulfilled the following requirements:
Has at least five years of surgical training and a minimum of two years of plastic surgery training.
Is board-certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Is trained and experienced in all plastic surgery procedures, including breast, body, face and reconstruction.
Is peer-reviewed for safety and ethical standards prior to attaining the honor of active membership.
Only operates in accredited facilities.
Why is it important to choose a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?
Many physicians who perform cosmetic procedures will claim board certification, but it is important to clarify which board. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is a part of the American Board of Medical Specialties and has been in existence since 1937. Certification by this board signifies that the surgeon has completed an approved plastic surgery residency, has passed a comprehensive written examination, and has passed an oral examination. Following this, he or she is then required to maintain certification through case submissions, continuing medical education and written examinations. This rigorous process ensures that those who identify themselves as a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery are held to the highest standards of patient safety, patient satisfaction and ethical behavior.
I do not live in the Columbus Ohio area. Can Dr. Houser still perform my breast lift?
Dr. Houser has many patients who travel from outside the central Ohio area to have breast lift surgery as well as other plastic surgery procedures. Because of this we have partnered with a post-surgical care facility located in a luxury hotel in downtown Columbus. The professionals at Cosmetic Surgery Recovery Suites provide discrete and attentive care following plastic surgical procedures. For more information see www.cosmeticsurgeryrecoverysuites.com. Other options are available as well to meet individual needs. Feel free to ask about this at your consultation.
