ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant
The ARTAS Experience
Deciding to have a hair transplant procedure is an important, life-changing decision. Understanding the details of the ARTAS® Robotic Procedure will help you determine if it is right for you. You will need to know what to expect before, during and after the procedure, as well as when you can expect to see results.
The ARTAS Robotic Procedure was designed with you in mind. Developed with leading hair transplant physicians and researchers, this state-of-the-art technology was created to eliminate the guesswork and fatigue associated with manual handheld methods, along with the scarring, complications and downtime of existing invasive surgical techniques. Unlike older transplant methods, no stitches are required, rendering your procedure nearly undetectable. You can now expect natural-looking results without the side effects and recovery times resulting from older techniques. Overcome the negative stigma associated with traditional hair transplants and reap the benefits of this revolutionary, physician-controlled technology.
During the initial stage, hair is selectively harvested with robotic precision providing consistent graft dissection. Advanced robotics provide speed and harvesting accuracy unavailable with manual handheld techniques.
The ARTAS System uses Recipient Site Making to implement your treatment design which is carefully created with the ARTAS Hair Studio Technology. Using the process of robotic Recipient Site Making, the ARTAS System protects your pre-existing, healthy hair. Survival and growth rates of the transplanted hair depends entirely on the meticulous creation of these robotic recipient sites.
How Will You Look?
The ARTAS Hair Studio® Technology is a 3D photograph based simulation of your potential procedure results. During your consultation, your clinician will work to design your personalized cosmetic hair pattern and illustrate different options, showing you various graft counts and hair distribution, with your direct input. The same ARTAS Hair Studio Technology is used to create your robotic Recipient Site Making treatment design which is then transfered to the ARTAS Robotic System for implementation.
Day of the Procedure
Most ARTAS Robotic Procedures start in the morning and end in the afternoon. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a loose-fitting hat to wear home after your procedure.
During the Procedure
During the ARTAS Robotic Procedure, you will be seated and the physician and clinical team will do everything they can to ensure your comfort. A local anesthetic will be used while you remain awake and alert during the procedure. Most patients describe their experience as virtually pain-free.
The physician-assisted ARTAS® Robotic System will use advanced algorithms to select the best hairs for harvesting, while preserving the natural look of your donor area. Your aesthetic design from ARTAS Hair Studio is delivered to the robot for Recipient Site Making. Your hair is then transplanted into thinning areas.
There will be time for breaks during the procedure, so you should expect to have a pleasant experience throughout the process.
After the Procedure
You will be able to return home immediately after the procedure. Your clinician will instruct you on how to care for your newly transplanted hair. Most people will sleep comfortably without pain immediately post-procedure and will return to their regular activities in a few days.
Your New Hair Growth
Follow your clinician’s instructions on how to shampoo and care for your hair. Your newly transplanted hair, like the rest of your hair, grows steadily over time. After a few months, you will begin to see new hair growth. Around six months, you will start to notice significant growth. Your hair will continue to grow in the treated areas over time. You will be able to take care of your newly transplanted, permanent hair as you normally would.

Preparing for the ARTAS® Robotic Procedure – Transitional Haircuts
We encourage a transitional haircut starting a month or so prior to your ARTAS® Robotic Procedure. Ultimately, it is best to have your hair 1 millimeter in length the day of your procedure. Typically within 7 to 10 days after your ARTAS Robotic Procedure, your donor area will be nearly undetectable.
Steps for a Transitional Haircut
1. Start with your original haircut
2. A month prior to your ARTAS Robotic Procedure, shorten your hair length to 3 millimeters
3. 2-3 days prior to your ARTAS Robotic Procedure, shorten your hair length to 1 millimeter
What to Expect after your ARTAS Robotic Procedure
Immediately following your procedure
Your physician will provide you post-procedure instructions, including directions for sleeping, activity modification, sun protection of your scalp and any medications, creams or ointments you may require. Most patients experience little pain after hair transplantation. If discomfort does occur, it usually can be controlled with non-aspirin pain relievers such as acetaminophen.
The day and the week following your procedure
You may use baby shampoo or other mild shampoo on your hair the first day following your procedure using a low pressure shower head or the “Pour Cup Shampooing” technique.
The important thing when washing your hair is to be very gentle. Rinse your head with cool to lukewarm water using a low running water pressure on an adjustable showerhead. Alternatively, you may use a cup to rinse the area. Lather a dime-sized amount of mild shampoo or baby shampoo onto your palms and lightly pat the shampoo onto the grafted areas. To avoid manipulating the area, lather the surrounding hair and allow the lather foam to cover the transplanted area. This allows the suds and the water to gradually wash over the grafts. Rinse the suds either using the low pressure showerhead or a cup filled with water.
Hair Care Tips
- Do not aggressively manipulate the transplanted area with fingertips or fingernails for the first 3 days following the procedure. You may shampoo softly in a circular motion on the 4th day following surgery.
- Allow your hair to air dry. Do not blow dry, flat iron or use hair styling products the day after surgery or per your physician’s instructions. Hair combing may resume the day after surgery; however the comb should not touch the grafts themselves.
- You may resume your normal shampooing routine after 7 days, or as instructed by your physician.
- Follow your physician’s instructions regarding when you can resume use of a blow dryer, hairspray, mousse, gel, chemical hair treatments, perms, hair color, Rogaine and Propecia. Your physician will discuss the shedding of any crusts that may form.
The ARTAS Hair Studio® Technology for Consultations
See Your Potential Results Before Your Procedure with the ARTAS Hair Studio® Technology
An important question patients seeking a hair transplant procedure ask is “How will I look after my procedure?”. Up until now, you could only imagine how your results would look and cross your fingers. Now, with the introduction of the groundbreaking ARTAS Hair Studio Technology, you do not need to wonder any longer.
During the consultation, your physician will use the ARTAS Hair Studio Technology to create a customized hair transplant design as a 3D model based on your personal photographs.
Different aesthetic outcomes require different graft numbers, distribution and placement of your transplanted hair. Using ARTAS Hair Studio, you will see the optimal number of grafts and hairline design needed to meet your expectations. No guessing is required. Together you can make a decision based on your needs and your physician’s recommendations.
ARTAS Hair Studio Simulation (2,600 Grafts)
Here Is The Process Of Your ARTAS Hair Studio Consultation
Your clinician will take photos of you to design a customized hair pattern and illustrate aesthetic options. You will see the potential results if your grafts are placed in different areas of your scalp and how increasing your hair fullness and improving your hairline design will change your appearance.
Being able to view these different options helps address a fear of the unknown by enabling you to preview your potential outcome and see what you could look like with your new, permanently growing hair. If they are part of your decision-making process to choose to have a procedure, your spouse will also benefit from seeing what you could look like after your ARTAS Robotic Procedure. It is very helpful to actually see what your physician is describing vs. having to use your imagination and hope for the best.
This process may help to build your confidence by presenting you with an achievable, desirable aesthetic outcome. Men who decide to have a hair transplant benefit from understanding what is realistic and reasonable given their degree of thinning or baldness, facial structure, age and desired result. The physicians using ARTAS Hair Studio use their expertise and medical judgment to advise you and assist you in making the best decision.

ARTAS® Robotic Harvesting
Your Donor Area
A critical area on your head to consider is where your hair is being harvested from.
This is called the donor area and consists of an area on the back and sides of your head where hair is not affected by the hormone that causes male pattern baldness. This is permanently growing hair and when transplanted to your balding areas, continues to grow as it did before it was transplanted. It is important to ensure your donor area will look unblemished and your harvested area will look undetectable.
Your donor area is just as important as your transplant area. After your hair grows in where it was trimmed for your ARTAS® Robotic Procedure, your donor area should look intact and undetectable. A long scar or patchy looking donor area is an undesirable giveaway that you have had a hair transplant. You want your outcome to look undetectable. Your friends, family, loved ones and business associates should just think you look better, revitalized and more refreshed, without your procedure being obvious.
ARTAS® Robotic Harvesting
Your donor area is a very important area on your head where your hair is harvested from.
Another unique feature of the ARTAS Robotic Procedure is minimally invasive harvesting. Advanced algorithms identify and select your best hairs for harvesting, while maintaining the appearance of your donor area – all under the control of your physician. These are capabilities only available with the ARTAS System. Other hair transplant techniques do not offer this highly sophisticated technological advancement.
The Benefits of ARTAS Robotic Harvesting include:
- Intelligent algorithms identify and select your best hairs for harvesting
- Advanced digital imaging analyzes and tracks each hair sixty times per second
- Physician-assisted robotic technology delivers robust grafts
- Precision robotics provide speed and accuracy beyond human manual techniques
- Eliminates human fatigue and the potential for error associated with traditional transplants, providing consistent graft quality throughout the procedure
- Fast recovery so you can get back to work and your daily activities quickly
ARTAS® Recipient Site Making
The First and Only Robotic Recipient Site Making System
Protect Your Healthy/Terminal Hair with Recipient Site Making
A common question is “What happens to the hair that I still have in my transplanted area? Will it be damaged during the procedure?” The good news is no.
Once hairs are harvested, they are then implanted into the balding or thinning areas of your scalp. The appropriate placement of these hairs is essential when striving for an artful aesthetic result. Your physician uses ARTAS Hair Studio® Technology to build your treatment design. That treatment design is then transferred to the ARTAS® System to deliver your Recipient Site Making pattern. Survival and growth rates of the transplanted hair depends entirely on the meticulous creation of these robotic recipient sites.
Here are some key terms to help you understand how the ARTAS System is able to accomplish this extremely important differentiation.
- Healthy (terminal) hair – Is thicker, longer, and dark. Terminal hair is classified as permanent hair.
- Miniaturized (vellus) hair – Is shorter, fine, light-colored, and barely noticeable. Vellus hair is not considered permanent. These hairs have been miniaturized by male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and will eventually fall out, contributing to your hair loss or balding.
How Recipient Site Making Works
- Recipient Site Making avoids damaging your pre-existing healthy/terminal hair using ARTAS Artificial Intelligence, a series of algorithms that evaluate many hair characteristics.
- It is critical to identify both pre-existing healthy/terminal hair as well as miniaturized (vellus) hair in order to create the best possible Recipient Site Making outcome. The ARTAS System identifies and avoids damaging healthy/terminal hair resulting in providing you the best aesthetic outcome.
- It is also important to identify vellus hair in order to fill in balding areas and preserve areas that currently have healthy hair.
Additional Benefits of Recipient Site Making
- Creates natural site distribution in the transplant area that avoids damaging pre-existing healthy/terminal hair using a series of algorithms (ARTAS Artifical Intelligence) that evaluate many hair characteristics.
- Your physician uses ARTAS Hair Studio to build your treatment design. That treatment design is then transferred to the ARTAS System to deliver your robotic Recipient Site Making pattern.
- Physician-controlled hair angles, hair density, hair distribution and hair direction parameters for a natural looking result.
- ARTAS Artifical Intelligence helps to determine where recipient sites are made and provide the best possible aesthetic outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does the ARTAS Robotic Procedure work?
The ARTAS Robotic Procedure is a minimally invasive hair restoration solution that leverages digital imaging and precision robotics to harvest healthy grafts for transplantation. Unlike the earlier methods of hair restoration, there is no need for the surgical removal of a band of tissue from the back and sides of the head, no linear scar left after surgery and no need for stitches or staples to close the wound. The benefit is a quick recovery time and the ability to return to normal activities and work sooner.
Should I cut my hair before treatment?
Yes. Trimming your hair in the donor area allows the ARTAS Robotic System to accurately visualize, track and harvest each grouping of hairs. You will receive instructions on having your hair cut shorter in preparation for your ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant.
How will my hair look after the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant?
The ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant provides extremely natural looking results. After the procedure, you are able to wear your hair any length or style with confidence.
How is the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant different than “Hair Plugs”?
Old fashioned “hair plugs” included the harvesting of large patches of hair that resulted in an awkward and unnatural appearance once implanted. In the ARTAS Robotic Procedure, hairs are harvested in their natural groupings and then transplanted individually by your physician. Individual transplantation provides you with the look you desire, including a great looking hairline and a fuller head of hair.
Are ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant results permanent?
Yes. The ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant uses your own permanent growing hair, typically from the back of your head, and your physician then implants this hair to the thinning areas of your scalp. As this hair is not susceptible to the conditions that cause male pattern baldness, transplanted hair will last a lifetime.
How long does it take to recover and heal?
Recovery time with the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant is less than with most surgical cosmetic procedures. As there is no surgical incision or stitches required with the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant, healing time is short, and you can usually go back to your daily activities after a day or two. Some doctors schedule a follow up visit the morning after the procedure to examine your scalp and to teach you how to take care of your newly implanted hair.
When will my new hair start to grow?
Transplanted hair grows naturally in phases. New hairs are seen about three months after the procedure, and will continue to increase over the course of a full year. At approximately six months, you will enjoy a noticeable improvement and after a full year, you will see final results.
Will people know I have had a hair transplant procedure?
With the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant, any scarring is minimal and is nearly undetectable. Your new hair grows in gradually, reducing the chance that people will notice the procedure. Your friends and family will comment that you look better, but the results from your hair transplant are subtle and natural.
Does the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant procedure hurt?
The ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant, an outpatient procedure performed in the doctor’s office, requires only a local anesthetic. The patient feels virtually no pain. Some patients can experience minor discomfort and swelling post-procedure, which subsides in one to three days.
Will there be visible scarring in the donor area?
Because the ARTAS Robotic System selectively harvests individual hair groupings rather than removing a large area of scalp requiring sutures, there is minimal scarring in the donor area. Hair can be worn fashionably short, or in longer styles, whatever you prefer. You’re not limited by having to cover scarring from strip surgery.
What is the price of the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant?
Treatment costs will be determined during your consultation with your doctor and depend on the amount of new hair that you desire. Discuss the procedure pricing with your doctor, as some doctors may offer payment options.
How long does the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant procedure take?
The ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant usually takes from four to eight hours as determined by your doctor to achieve your hair restoration goals. You are comfortably seated during the process, and the doctor and staff are there with you to maximize your comfort throughout the procedure.
