The ARTAS Hair Studio® Technology is a 3D photograph based simulation of your potential procedure results. During your consultation, your clinician will work to design your personalized cosmetic hair pattern and illustrate different options, showing you various graft counts and hair distribution, with your direct input. The same ARTAS Hair Studio Technology is used to create your robotic Recipient Site Making treatment design which is then transfered to the ARTAS Robotic System for implementation.

Day of the Procedure

Most ARTAS Robotic Procedures start in the morning and end in the afternoon. Wear comfortable clothes and bring a loose-fitting hat to wear home after your procedure.

During the Procedure

During the ARTAS Robotic Procedure, you will be seated and the physician and clinical team will do everything they can to ensure your comfort. A local anesthetic will be used while you remain awake and alert during the procedure. Most patients describe their experience as virtually pain-free.

The physician-assisted ARTAS® Robotic System will use advanced algorithms to select the best hairs for harvesting, while preserving the natural look of your donor area. Your aesthetic design from ARTAS Hair Studio is delivered to the robot for Recipient Site Making. Your hair is then transplanted into thinning areas.

There will be time for breaks during the procedure, so you should expect to have a pleasant experience throughout the process.

You will be able to return home immediately after the procedure. Your clinician will instruct you on how to care for your newly transplanted hair. Most people will sleep comfortably without pain immediately post-procedure and will return to their regular activities in a few days.

Your New Hair Growth

Follow your clinician’s instructions on how to shampoo and care for your hair. Your newly transplanted hair, like the rest of your hair, grows steadily over time. After a few months, you will begin to see new hair growth. Around six months, you will start to notice significant growth. Your hair will continue to grow in the treated areas over time. You will be able to take care of your newly transplanted, permanent hair as you normally would.

Preparing for the ARTAS® Robotic Procedure – Transitional Haircuts

We encourage a transitional haircut starting a month or so prior to your ARTAS® Robotic Procedure. Ultimately, it is best to have your hair 1 millimeter in length the day of your procedure. Typically within 7 to 10 days after your ARTAS Robotic Procedure, your donor area will be nearly undetectable.

What to Expect after your ARTAS Robotic Procedure

Immediately following your procedure

Your physician will provide you post-procedure instructions, including directions for sleeping, activity modification, sun protection of your scalp and any medications, creams or ointments you may require. Most patients experience little pain after hair transplantation. If discomfort does occur, it usually can be controlled with non-aspirin pain relievers such as acetaminophen.

The day and the week following your procedure

You may use baby shampoo or other mild shampoo on your hair the first day following your procedure using a low pressure shower head or the “Pour Cup Shampooing” technique.

The important thing when washing your hair is to be very gentle. Rinse your head with cool to lukewarm water using a low running water pressure on an adjustable showerhead. Alternatively, you may use a cup to rinse the area. Lather a dime-sized amount of mild shampoo or baby shampoo onto your palms and lightly pat the shampoo onto the grafted areas. To avoid manipulating the area, lather the surrounding hair and allow the lather foam to cover the transplanted area. This allows the suds and the water to gradually wash over the grafts. Rinse the suds either using the low pressure showerhead or a cup filled with water.

Hair Care Tips

  • Do not aggressively manipulate the transplanted area with fingertips or fingernails for the first 3 days following the procedure. You may shampoo softly in a circular motion on the 4th day following surgery.
  • Allow your hair to air dry. Do not blow dry, flat iron or use hair styling products the day after surgery or per your physician’s instructions. Hair combing may resume the day after surgery; however the comb should not touch the grafts themselves.
  • You may resume your normal shampooing routine after 7 days, or as instructed by your physician.
  • Follow your physician’s instructions regarding when you can resume use of a blow dryer, hairspray, mousse, gel, chemical hair treatments, perms, hair color, Rogaine and Propecia. Your physician will discuss the shedding of any crusts that may form.

Hair growth typically begins around the third month after your procedure. The majority of hair growth usually occurs between five and eight months following your procedure, with the remainder of growth between eight and ten months.* This is a guideline regarding hair growth and may vary by patient.
