Facial Implants

Common facial implants include the cheek, nose, jaw and chin implants. Occasionally, custom implants are needed to correct facial asymmetries or deformities resulting from trauma for reconstructive surgery.

Implants may be placed as a primary procedure, but are often done in combination with other procedures such as a facelift, chin and / or neck liposuction, brow lift, neck lift, rhinoplasty, and other cosmetic procedures, to complement a result. Recovery depends on the area being treated and if additional procedures have been performed during the same surgical visit.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about Facial Implants

What are facial implants made out of?

Most facial implants, including nasal implants, cheek implants, and chin implants used by Dr. Houser, are made from solid silicone, are well tolerated and have been used by plastic surgeons for many years.

I am considering getting a chin implant but I am concerned about having a visible scar. What type of scar should I expect from chin implant surgery?

Most facial implants, including nasal implants, cheek implants, and chin implants used by Dr. Houser are made from solid silicone, are well tolerated and have been used by plastic surgeons for many years. The incision from a chin implant is very small. The scar should be almost imperceptible and is well hidden just below the chin.

What should I expect in terms of recovery following chin implant surgery? Is it painful?

You should expect some swelling and some patients experience bruising. Most patients report only mild discomfort, not pain, following a chin implant. Many also report some temporary (usually a week or two) difficultly or awkwardness in smiling or chewing food.

I am planning on having a facelift soon. I am bothered by the “sunken” appearance of my cheeks. Will cheek implants correct this?

Cheek implants along with a facelift should improve this. When performed with a facelift, cheek implants may give more fullness to the mid-portion of the face to accentuate the cheekbones. The incisions used are either through the mouth or the eyelid.

I would like to have a chin implant to strengthen my profile. Is this an outpatient procedure?

Although no two patients are just alike, the placement of facial implants is usually performed on an outpatient basis at our fully certified and American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilitates (AAAASF) fully compliant surgical facility

I have noticed that not all surgeons performing facial implants in Ohio are board certified. Why should I choose a plastic surgeon who is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgery (ASPS)? Is this important?

An ASPS member surgeon has fulfilled the following requirements:

  • Has at least five years of surgical training and a minimum of two years of plastic surgery training.
  • Is board-certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery or The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
  • Is trained and experienced in all plastic surgery procedures, including breast, body, face and reconstruction.
  • Is peer-reviewed for safety and ethical standards prior to attaining the honor of active membership.
  • Only operates in accredited facilities.

Why is it important to choose a plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

Many physicians who perform cosmetic procedures will claim board certification, but it is important to clarify which board. The American Board of Plastic Surgery is a part of the American Board of Medical Specialties and has been in existence since 1937. Certification by this board signifies that the surgeon has completed an approved plastic surgery residency, has passed a comprehensive written examination, and has passed an oral examination. Following this, he or she is then required to maintain certification through case submissions, continuing medical education and written examinations. This rigorous process ensures that those who identify themselves as a diplomat of the American Board of Plastic Surgery are held to the highest standards of patient safety, patient satisfaction and ethical behavior.
